Dental Implants – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Welcome to our Dental Implant FAQ page. Here, you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions our patients ask about implants, procedures, and what to expect.

General Dental Implant Questions

1. What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots-typically made of titanium-that are placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. They support crowns, bridges, or full-arch prosthetic teeth for a natural-looking, long-lasting smile.

2. Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with missing or damaged teeth, good overall health, and sufficient jawbone are candidates. Even if you’ve experienced bone loss, treatments like bone grafts or sinus lifts may help qualify you.

3. How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, dental implants can last decades and often a lifetime. The prosthetic teeth attached to the implants may need to be replaced over time due to natural wear.

4. Are dental implants removable or permanent?

Implants are permanent and securely fixed in the jawbone. Unlike dentures, they stay in your mouth and do not need to be removed.

Treatment Options & Procedures

5. What is a Full Arch implant solution?

A Full Arch treatment uses 4–6 implants per arch to support a fully fixed set of new teeth. Your treatment includes an exam, X-rays, all necessary extractions, sedation, and a fixed provisional restoration.

6. What is an Overdenture?

An overdenture is a removable, snap-in denture secured by 2–4 implants per arch using Locator attachments. It offers greater stability and retention than traditional dentures.

7. What is All-on-4®?

All-on-4® is a full-arch technique where four precisely placed implants support a complete set of fixed teeth. It provides same-day functionality for many patients and is similar to the Full Arch solution we offer.

8. Can dentures be converted into implants?

Traditional dentures cannot be turned into implants. However, existing dentures may sometimes be adapted to snap onto new implants, depending on their condition.

Implant Consultation & Process

9. What happens during my implant consultation?

A treatment coordinator will take a 3D cone beam CT scan of your mouth and jaw. Dr. Sung will review your scan, assess your needs, and create a personalized treatment plan. You’ll also receive transparent pricing and financing options.

10. How long does the implant procedure take?

Most patients receive extractions, implants, and temporary fixed teeth in a single day. Healing takes several months before the final prosthesis is placed.

11. Is the implant procedure painful?

Sedation is included to ensure your comfort. Most patients report minimal discomfort afterward, typically manageable with standard pain medication.

12. How should I prepare for treatment?

You may be asked to fast before sedation and arrange a ride home. Your treatment coordinator will give you detailed instructions before your procedure.

Care, Maintenance & Additional Information

13. How do I care for my dental implants?

Care for implants just as you would natural teeth: brush, floss, and attend regular dental checkups. Overdentures should be removed and cleaned daily, while fixed teeth are maintained normally.

14. What is the success rate of dental implants?

Dental implants have a success rate of over 95%, especially when placed by experienced professionals like Dr. Sung and when patients maintain good oral hygiene.

15. What if I want “metal-free” implants?

Zirconia (ceramic) implants are a metal-free alternative and may be an option depending on your case. Discuss this with Dr. Sung during your consultation.

16. Can dental implants help if I already have dentures?

Absolutely! Implants can significantly improve stability, chewing power, and confidence. Both implant-supported overdentures and fixed full-arch solutions are great upgrades for denture wearers.
